Monster Mapped® Books

Phonics programmes only cover a small set of the English code. Once children start reading real books, they quickly meet words that have not been taught.

Mapped Words® make every word accessible. Each sound is shown with a Phonemie® and each grapheme is highlighted by our Code Mapping algorithm, so children can see which letters go together.
Even phonics readers can be mapped, making them easier for the one in four children who struggle to keep up with programme content.

Why Mapped Words® in Books Matter

Systematic phonics programmes introduce children to a core set of grapheme–phoneme correspondences (GPCs), often around one hundred. This provides a starting point, but it is far from the whole code. English contains thousands of words with spellings that go well beyond programme content. Once children leave the comfort of their phonics lessons and pick up a book, they quickly encounter words that have not been taught.


Closing the Gap with Monster Mapped® Words

Mapped Words® change this experience. Using our Code Mapping® algorithm, each grapheme in a word is clearly shown, with Phonemies® representing the phonemes. Children can see which letters belong together and what sound value they carry. This allows them to work out any word, even those beyond the programme sequence. Even children who master their phonics programme can be tripped up by words outside it. Without mapped support, they may guess, skip, or mislearn spellings.
